The Shelterbelt farmers: Craig, Rowan, Erica, and Phoenix

Shelterbelt Farm is the pride and joy of the Frenay/Modisher family: Craig, Erica and their young children Rowan and Phoenix. Started as a homestead in 2005, 2010 was our first year of operation as an official farm. We’re located in the scenic rolling hills of Caroline, NY, in the Finger Lakes region just southeast of Ithaca. The farm is home to three generations of Modishers, and pigs, sheep, turkeys, bees, and ducks. The current residents will be joined in the next couple of years by 100% grass-fed cattle, an orchard, and year-round vegetables grown in unheated greenhouses.

We farm because we are passionate about regenerating the health of ourselves, our customers, and our land, by managing our animals in a way that builds soil and plant diversity, provides a low-stress, happy life for our animals, and produces nourishing pasture-raised meats. We believe that all-natural production practices, superior taste and quality, and good environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand.

In our “spare” time, Craig runs Ironwood Builders with his business partners, and Erica works at the Cornell Small Farms Program as the co-manager of the Beginning Farmer Project – convenient, eh?
